Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 15,846 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of Worcester's five towns and the second-smallest town in New England after Norwalk, Connecticut. Gloucester was first settled by English colonists in 1629 as part of the Boston Colony. The original village of Gloucester was located on what is now State Road 3 near present-day Randolph Street. In 1723, a group of some 60 farmers from Gloucester began to build a sawmill on the South Branch of the MAquatuck River south of what is now downtown Glocester. This mill became known as "The Mill" and continued operation until it burned down in 1836. In 1792, James Ketchum organized a Baptist church in Glocester which led to its nickname "The Church at Ketchum". Outgrowing its original location on Meetinghouse Hill (now Barton Hall), Ketchum built his own brick church on Main Street in 1802 which has been continuously used since then. The first post office for Gloucester opened in 1795 and closed in 1903; it was reopened under new name Westborough after merger with other small communities within Worcester County including Westborough Heights and Webbstown. In 1814, Glover Clinton founded Griggs Taverns & Wines which quickly became one of the leading wine brands within America and still exists today as an independently owned business with production facilities outside of Northampton, Massachusetts.
The town of Gloucester was originally settled by the Abenakis in 1635. The first white settler, John Morse, arrived in 1641. In 1764, the towns of Northborough and Winthrop were merged into Gloucester. In 1848, the town was renamed Chelmsford after Lord Chelmsford, Governor of Massachusetts from 1847 to 1850.
