The first European to arrive in the area, John Winthrop, founded the town of Gloucester on November 3, 1627. The first business establishment in the new town was a tannery. While early businesses were not very successful, word spread about the benefits of growing tobacco and other crops in this fertile region. In 1641, Gloucester became a separate town from Salem when that community seceded from Massachusetts. In 1768, Gloucester incorporated as a village under the name of "Goochland". However, it reverted back to its original name on May 15th of that year due to lack of support from the village government. On December 1st of that year, Goochland became an incorporated town with a population of 100 people. This increase in population led to increased development within the limits of the newly created town and made it one of the most rapidly expanding villages during its time as an incorporated municipality. On October 10th, 1824, Gloucester merged with Revere (then called Quincy) to form what is now called "Gloucester-Revere". The merger resulted in an overall decrease in population due to social reasons (e.g., rising costs associated with commuting). However, re-population has occurred since then thanks to various economic developments within both villages which have led both properties values and jobs growth along with them
