Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town located in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 11,734 at the 2010 census. The town is bordered by the towns of Easton to the north and Westboro to the west. To the south it borders Hampshire. The first permanent settler in Gloucester was Nicholas Raynolds who platted and named his new township on April 12, 1786 in what is now east side of town. He also founded a school there which still stands today as Northampton County's only high school. In 1814 Nicholas Raynolds' grandson John Raynolds donated land for a public square in downtown Gloucester and named it after him. Other early settlers included Benjamin Fenton and his family who came from Newburyport, MA in 1784; Samuel Gridley and his brother-in-law Ebenezer Horton arrived about 1797; Moses Fleetwood settled along Narragansett Bay about 1800; Peter Best settled near modern day Center Pointe; John Sprague set up shop along Southbridge Road about 1802 When Worcester County was created on January 1, 1802, much of what is now Worcester Township including parts of present day Gloucester were included within it as part of the newly formed county seat at Framingham (later Schaumburg). On February 14th, 1814 Josiah Quincy became one of the founders ofFramingham when he moved from Boston with his wife Lucy to start an agricultural colony known as Quincy's Patent Land Company - later renamed Quincy & Stone Associates Incorporated - which bought 685 acres (253 hectares) of land west of Framingham center from Nathaniel Bangsborough on July 15th 1819 after Bangsborough had failed to sell it within three months due to lack of interest from potential investors including Quincy himself. That same year Josiah Quincy served as President pro tempore (prime minister)ofthe Massachusetts HouseOf Representatives for two years until he resigned due to term limitsimposed by then Governor Thomas Moulton Jr.. In 1830 Jonathan Edwards played an important role in helping found Springfield College where he served as its first president followed by Increase Mather who served until 1835 when he was succeeded by Amos Kendall In 1840 Edward Everett took office as governor resulting in some changes within Worcester County government with many people moving away or being transferred within government departments including William Ellery Chanute becoming deputy treasurer under gubernatorial appointee Edwin Stanton while Nathan Hale became justice OFourtner temporal officer responsible for all criminal prosecutions throughoutMassachusetts before eventually retiring effective December 31st 1865; during Chanute's time desktop publishing pioneer Alfred O'Neill taught at Springfield College before moving there permanently around 1870 while Hale continued teaching until his death in 1916 In 1850 Charles Goodyear established Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., one of America’s largest tire manufacturers based headquartered now at Union Street Plaza in Gloucester just outside Ofallon VillageGloucester ;Goodyear began making tyres here specifically for cars beginning production May 15th 1926 His son Bill Goodyear continues this tradition today with over 300 employees making tires here across four shifts days per week producing over 2 million pounds(100 metric tons)of rubber each year catered both directlyto American consumers through their online store www.goodyearsdirectories . According to the 2000 U.S Census there were 11,816 people living in Gloucester Cdp., of whom 7% were under the age of eighteen; 5% were sixty five or over; and 96% were white alone. Out of total population 10% lived below poverty line for any income level including no children under eighteen years old and 3% had incomes six hundred dollars or less per week as their only source of income
Gloucester was one of the thirteen towns in Massachusetts that voted to become a part of the new United States of America on July 4, 1776. The town was named for General William Gloucester, who had fought in the American Revolution. The first settler in Gloucester was John Winthrop, who founded the town in 1630.
