Gloucester, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 27,898 at the 2010 census. Gloucester is part of the Worcester–Essex Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Gloucester" comes from English and means "place of the circumcision god." Glocester on first settlement was called Quaker Meeting Place. In 1692, John Winthrop became the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony and decided to change the name to Gloucester after his home county in England. At that time, most people thought that Name had nothing to do with Glocester because there were no other places named Gloucestershire in England. The town was chartered on July 1st, 1784 by George Washington as part of the new Province of Worcester. On November 25th, 1801 it became a city under charter granted by General James Kieft. The city limits were enlarged in 1854 when it joined the larger Worcester metropolitan area and has since shrunk again (2010 population 14,362). When General Robert Ewell's division invaded New Hampshire during WWII he ordered all citizens within two miles (3 km) of his headquarters to report for military service immediately without food or sleep until relieved by higher-ups or killed or captured! This order caused great concern among many residents who knew they could not leave their homes without consequences! So when word came down that food was being delivered into town one man went out and collected six cans of tomatoes from a grocery store! He brought them back inside and ate them as breakfast before reporting for duty! This story about an individual taking care of his community is typical of what took place during World War II in America; individuals stepped up and did what needed to be done without asking any questions or receiving thanks from those in power!

In 1784, the town became a part of Worcester County, Massachusetts. In 1847, Gloucester became a city after being granted municipal rights by the state of Massachusetts. During World War II, Gloucester joined with other towns in Worcester County to form the Worcester-Gloucester metropolitan area.
