Gardner, MA is a small town in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It was founded in 1778 by Colonel Samuel Gardner and his wife, Deborah. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves. In 1861, Gardner was the site of one of the first free black churches in Massachusetts. The community has been occupied by white and African Americans since that time. In 1876, Gardner became home to one of the world's first industrial illiterates when General Electric built its factory there. That same year, it also saw the birth of American Rifleman magazine and rifle company. In 1907, Gardner had its first post office which continued operations until 1959. In 1916, a new high school was opened in Gardner and remains operational today as Westhill Academy (WAA). It was here that future United States Senator John F Kennedy learned to shoot at age 8 years old. Today, Gardner features several interesting attractions such as its golf course which has hosted numerous professional tournaments; its historical museum which documents the town's history from before it was settled to present day; and its annual Pumpkinfest which takes place on October 16th each year.
