In 1777, the towns of Framingham and Northborough were merged into Gardner. Gardner is located on the border of Franklin and Middlesex Counties. It is bordered to the east by Arlington Heights, to the south by Hyde Park Corner and Brookline, to the west by Quincy and Southbridge. The nearest city is Boston. According to the United States Census Bureau, Gardner has a total area of , of which is land and (1%) is water. The town center lies along Route 128 just north of Interstate 93 exit 12A which leads to Boston proper. Route 128 forms part of the border between Gardner to the east and Arlington Heights to the west while portions of both neighborhoods are also bordered by Watertown Road (south), Milton Avenue (northwest) and Wellesley Street (northeast). Gardner was founded in 1636 by Samuel Gardner. It is the oldest town in Massachusetts and one of the most significant settlements in New England. The town's history reflects that of its founders: Samuel Gardner, a Quaker, and his wife Rebecca; their son, John Gardner; and their daughter-in-law Sarah Goodrich. The first European to visit Gardner was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sighted it on his way from Newfoundland to Machiavelli's Italy in 1524. In 1636, Samuel Gardner settled here with his wife Rebecca and four children. When he died in 1656, the town had a population of fifty-six people. In 1777, General Israel Putnam built Fort William at the junction of the Massasoit River and Nahant River for protection against French forces advancing through Boston Harbor. The fort served as an important strategic point until 1781 when it was abandoned after British forces tookBoston. Gardner grew rapidly during the 18th century; by 1800 there were over 1,000 residents living in the town. However, growth stopped around 1830 due to low levels of rainfall and a lack of industry which led to increased flooding problems throughout thetowns core areaQMMA). By 1840 only twenty-four people lived within arms reach of downtown Gardners central square (the "Fenway"). Growth resumed after 1850 but again slowed down during World War II because of shortages of resources such as lumber and munitions."
