In 1964 Gardner incorporated as a city under state law with a population exceeding 1,000 people; it has since grown even larger with annexations from most of neighboring townships over the years while still maintaining its residential focus unchanged since its incorporation – one reason it has retained its nickname “Gardner’s City” despite having no connection thereto historically or geographically). In 1916 Gardner was renamed to honor abolitionist leader Ebenezer Seward Gardner. The first permanent settler in what is now Gardner was John Gardner, who arrived from Connecticut in 1795. He founded a small trading post on the Connecticut River near present-day Northampton where he traded goods with Native Americans and fur traders from Great Britain and France. By 1800, Gardner had established himself as one of the leading commercial centers in New England due to his exports of cornmeal and other grains, lumber ( principally for buildings), lead ore, leather products, cheese, beer and whiskey. In 1824 Gardners village became an organized town when it ratified a charter granted by the Massachusetts General Court. The town grew rapidly during its early years; by 1830 it boasted a population of 648 residents and had begun developing several vital industries including brewing Distillery No 1 (now part of Harvard University), harnessing local mills for flour production (the first such experiment in New England), tanning hides for clothing manufacture etc., which helped contribute to its growth as an economic center noted for its quality breads and wines among other items.
