Gardner, Massachusetts is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. Gardner is one of four towns in Middlesex County and it is part of the Worcester–Middlesex–Easton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the north-central side of Worcester County and on the east side of Worcester Township. The first white person to live in Gardner was John Greenough who settled there in 1636. He was probably from Ipswich, Suffolk, England. The first schoolhouse in Gardner was built about 1715 by Rev. John Fenway and his wife Deborah Copley for their children who were then attending a school in Milford. In 1817 James Gadsden erected a gristmill here which became known as the Gadsden Millinery Mill because it made lace muffs for women's hats and bonnets. By 1860 Gardner had a population of 1,500 people with 153 stores and 36 churches including both Congregationalists (Congregational Church) and Episcopalians (Episcopal Church). In 1870 Indian Removal Act forced many settlers out of their homes into what is now Oklahoma Territory; most went to Kansas where they formed new settlements or returned home to join their families that had already moved southward parallel to US 95 near Topeka. A few individuals decided to stay and develop Gardner as one large farming community while others headed back eastward along Utopia Road through present day Leicester where they founded Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad Depot but never reached Gardner proper until after World War II when they built an official station there on Route 128 just outside present day Walthamstow MA According to the 2000 census, there were 4,093 people living in Gardner; 2% more than the 4,052 counted two decades earlier but unchanged from 1990 Census data which showed 3% growth during this time period among all villages within Middlesex County except for North Chelmsford NY .
