The town was originally named "Sheffield," after two adjacent settlements in Hampshire County that were combined into one township in 1824. A post office was established in Sheffield on July 1, 1825, and remained so until it was discontinued in 1908. The first settler in Gardner was Joshua Beattie who arrived around 1800 from Scotland. Beattie founded a cabin near present day Gates Mill on the border of Worcester County and Hampshire Counties. Prior to 1830 there were no villages or towns within present day Gardner Township boundaries; all land west of Route 9 consisted only of woods and open meadows which were hunted by Native Americans for their pelts (furs). In 1823, Samuel Atkinson settled east ofpresentday Gates Mill on what is now South Main Street; he built a tavern which served as his home until his death about 1840. Atkinson is considered to be the first white person to reside permanently in present day Gardner Township when he built his home there about 1825. Heber Creguen also settled east ofpresentday Gates Mill about this time; he also built a tavern which served as his home until his death about 1850s He also is consideredto be the first white person to reside permanentlyin present day Gartner Township when he builthis home thereabout 1830s These early settlers quickly realized that they needed a place where they could store their goods while they awaited passage through English Customs during their stay in America – hence the creationof “Town Hall” or “Post Office” as we know it today; Gulch Road became known as Main Street soon thereafter! The original Town Hall building still stands today but has been replaced several times over its lifetime including most recently by our current facility located on North Main Street approximately 2 miles south of downtown Gardnersville!
