The town was first settled by English settlers in 1630. It was named for General Francis Gardner who had commanded American forces during the Pequot War and who had helped to found Worcester in 1688. After landing on what is now known as Greenough Square they built their first houses there before moving out into open fields that would become present day neighborhoods called Turner Square northward along East Main Street while manuring areas becamepresentday side streets renamed Archer Road/Greenough Avenue southward along Southwick Avenue until eventually reaching present day Central Park where they built several homes before finally settling down around 1720 AD according to contemporary records having about 100 residents living on about 10 acres with 3 lots available per family... By 1790 most residents were removed to other parts of Massachusetts under British rule following the Boston Tea Party when colonists began protesting British policies executed through arrest warrants issued against select men... In 1793 Colonel Thomas Hutchinson organized a militia company from those remaining in Gardner led by Lieutenant Colonel Edmund Andros moved out into open country near Upton where he erected a fortified thornhill fortification known today as Hutchinson Hill overlooking modern day Worcester

Gardner, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The population was 6,611 at the 2010 census. Gardner was first settled in 1636 by the Puritans and has been home to a variety of cultures and religions since then. The town became an incorporated municipality in 1853. Gardner is bordered by Worcester to the north, Hampden to the east, Belchertown to the south, and Westborough to the west. The first settler in Gardner was John Morse who arrived in 1636 with his family from England. He built a small cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Morse Place." In 1764, Samuel Fitch purchased land east of present-day Main Street from John Morse for $1 per acre. At that time there were no roads or trails through this area so Fitch established himself as a trader and furrier with his shop at what is now Meetinghouse Road and Old Pike Road east of today's downtown Gardner. In 1772 Nathaniel Parker bought some land southwest of present day Main Street from Fitch for $3 per acre also establishing himself as a trader and furrier with his store at what is now Meetinghouse Road northeast of downtown Gardner. By 1800 there were over 20 businesses operating in central Gardner including six shops owned by men: four stores run by Nathaniel Parker (the first store being located on meetinghouse road), two stores run by James Barker (the second store being located on upper avenue), one store run by Simon Rogers (a blacksmith), one store run by Jno Garretson (a cooper) and one business operated jointly between several men such as Nathaniel Parker/Nathaniel Garretson/Simon Rogers which involved making goods for others under a tent at Belchertown Common where saltpetre production began early in history The village slowly grew due to its location close to highways running through Worcester County as well as its potential for trade with other areas including Boston which had become rapidly expanding during this time period . In 1827 Norwich postmaster General Amos Stoddard set up a mail route between Boston and Worcester via Gardner . This route allowed residents of central Gardner access to important goods carried across county lines without having to go out into rural territory . By 1830 there were five businesses functioning within central Gardner including three general stores, two mercantile houses, four grocery stores, six printing presses etc A variety of events took place throughout this time period leading up to incorporation which included debates about boundaries between townships; boundary changes resulting from annexation or consolidation of adjacent townships; elections held for select officials; erection of public buildings such as meetinghouses; construction of roads; laying out square blocks
