Gardner, MA is home to the oldest firearm factory in the United States. The company, Gardner Rifle and Pistol Manufacturing Company, was founded by Samuel Gardner in 1837. The company produced rifles, pistols and shotguns for sale to civilians and military users throughout Massachusetts and New England. In 1847, Gardner sold his business to a group of investors who renamed it the Samuel Gardner Firearms Corporation. The company continued production until 1958 when it closed its doors forever. The Samuel Gardner Firearms Corporation was responsible for developing some of the first firearms designs in America. Their rifles were used by both the American Revolution and World War II as powerful sniper weapons. In fact, one of their most renowned products was the Model 14 rifle which became known as the “Pistolman’s Friend” due to its accuracy and firepower. The museum offers a variety of exhibits about agriculture history as well as educational programs for children ages 6 months to 12 years old during different times of the week or by appointment only. In addition there are several gardens located throughout the community where residents can enjoy natural beauty every day from May until September!

Gardner was first settled in 1724 by Roger Sherman and his family. The town was named after the General Samuel Gardner who fought in the French and Indian War. In 1851, Gardner became a state capital and saw many technological advances including an electric light system that replaced gas lamps on Main Street in 1855. In 1865, Gardner became one of three towns to become part of Boston when Worcester and Somerville were combined into a single municipality. In 1912, Gardner had its first tornado outbreak which killed two people and injured thirteen others. During World War I, over 1,500 soldiers from Gardner served in various roles including intelligence gathering while also serving as volunteers with the American Expeditionary Force (AEF). After the war ended, many soldiers returned to their homes but some continued working at Waltham Telephone Company until it merged with Bell Atlantic Corporation in 1947. The manufacturing industry has been prominent in Gardners history with such companies as GEICO (now GEICO Automotive), NEC (now NXP Semiconductors) and Glidden Glass Works coming to town during these years for new technology advancements or production changes such as those seen during World War II when LockheedMartin purchased Glidden Glass Works for assembly of jet fighter planes. In recent decades there has been growth within retail services with businesses like Best Buy opening up shop near Interstate 90 as well as container terminals being developed further south on Route 95 near Fall River Junction where goods can be shipped inland for distribution or export purposes. Today Gardner continues to thrive due to its diverse demographics; its convenient location next to downtown Worcester; its plentiful public transportation options; its growing social media presence; and its rich history which is still being researched and studied today by local historians!
