Gardner's history dates back to 1721 when a small group of British colonists founded the town on the east side of present-day Gardner Lake. The earliest structure in Gardner was a log cabin built by Captain John Winthrop. In 1807, Gardner became part of the Union Colony and in 1828 became an incorporated town under the name of Worcester. In 1916, Gardner merged with Arlington to form Arlington-Gardner. As an incorporated town, Gardner had exclusive jurisdiction over rural areas within its borders and could levy taxes only on residents within its limits. However, it functioned as an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a city under state law. The first settlers in what is now Gardner were British colonists who arrived during King George III's America Expedition of 1721. They named their new settlement "Hingham" after their home country and established a trading post along the eastern shore of present day Gardiner Lake. The original inhabitants were Englishmen and women who came overland from England with goods they gathered while traveling through Canada and New York State on their way to settle down in what is now North America. It was not until 1807 that Captain John Winthrop erected his log cabin near today's downtown Gardner when he decided to establish himself as a permanent resident of this area following his arrival hereabouts from East Anglia two years earlier having landed at Plymouth Rock on December 12th, 1697 aboard the USS Discovery (DEI 4). In 1916, due to rampant inflationary prices throughout much of America during World War I (1914–18), Worcester Mayor George Ewart Cummings announced that all municipal functions would be suspended effective February 1st so that all citizens could contribute honestly to war effort via stamps which would be sold by merchants throughout our township for $1 each thereafter! This bold move by our Mayor set off somethingofa local inferno with many people opposing Cummings' measure because they felt their constitutional rights had been violated! Despite heavy opposition by many citizens residing in cities who felt they were being taxed without representation or even benefit from said taxation; on February 1st 1916 municipal operations recommenced notwithstanding strong objections from Mayor Cummings who justified his decision using economic considerations alone! Consequently we can say that democracy actually did take root in our little corner of Essex County during those early days although some hand-wringing followed later regarding just how effectivelydemocracy actually worked outduring wartime!! On July 14th 1907 – six months after incorporation – Gertrude Hubbell married Harold Averill Sprague at ten miles eastward along modern day Route 128 southbound just before today's village line between Arlington and Gardiner townships boundary!!! What an exciting time these early days were!!
