Gardner is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and has been around since 1636. Gardner is named for Nicholas Gardner, an early settler. Gardner is located on the southern border of the town of Northborough and is bordered by the towns of Medford to the east, Brockton to the north, Wareham to the west, and Quincy to the south. The town center lies along Route 3A north of Route 1A. Families who first settled in Gardner began fishing for cod and other seafood in what is now known as "Norton's Inlet". They built their first houses here in1636. By 1701 there were 210 residents living in Gardner. In 1762 Colonel William Prescott bought 1 million acres (4 square kilometers) of land from Samuel Adams for £10 per acre . This area would later become part of Northampton County when that county was created from parts of Rockingham and Hampshire counties on Apruary 15th 1802). It wasn't until after World War II that many people moved into this area because industries grew up such as fertilizer production which started up around 1945-1946 during World War II when munitions were produced near Gardner by General Dynamics Corporation (now Lockheed Martin). After World War II many businesses shut down due to economic recession but continue today with several new businesses opening up such as A&P grocery store which opened in 2006 adjacent to Holyoke High School; Sprague's Hardware store which opened adjacent to Eastman Center mall; KingSoopers grocery store which opened adjacent to Fenway Park; Home Depot - also located adjacent to Fenway Park; Dick's Sporting Goods - also located adjacent to Fenway Park; Pizza Hut - also located adjacent to Fenway Park; Dunkin' Donuts - located adjacent to Fenway Park The economy has been slowly recovering since 2007 but still remains difficult because there are few good jobs available outside Springfield or Worcester There have been recent efforts made by some citizens groups including Garden Cities Alliance- a group led by Mayor Elissa Matsui who wants gardens developed next door where housing will be provided for low income residents In 2016 voters passed a resolution urging state legislators not support any bill that would legalize recreational marijuana use within Massachusetts
