Gardner is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,646 at the 2010 census. Gardner is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Gardner were John Eliot and his family who arrived in 1636. They named their land "Gardner" after Samuel Gardiner, an early settler in nearby Lexington, Massachusetts. In 1793, Gardner became part of Plympton Township and remained so until 1955 when it became part of Plymouth County. One of the most famous people to live or work in Gardner was Cyrus McCormick who invented the McCormick Machine Company there in 1847-48. Other early residents include inventor August Ames (1810-1887), businessman Amos Kendall (1811-1900), and civil engineer Jabez Bowen (1794-1865). A post office called Gardner has been in operation since 1793. The first postmaster was Amos Kendall. In 1802–3, Ebenezer Strong established a gristmill here which still operates as a commercial enterprise today with flour and other grains being ground into flour products for local consumption or export to other countries

Gardner, Massachusetts is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Massachusetts. At the time of its founding, Gardner was one of six towns in what is now Worcester County. The town was named after Captain Nathaniel Gardner who explored and mapped much of what is now New England in the early 17th century. The first settler to arrive in Gardner was John Richards who built a log cabin on the present day corner of Main and Bennett Streets in 1792. In 1812, Samuel Gridley purchased land east of present day Gardner and built a farm known as Gridley's Hill overlooking Long Pond. In 1813, George Washington Carver arrived at Gardner from Watertown and established himself on his farm which he named Carver's Farm after himself. By 1850, Gardner had grown to over 100 residents with several shops and businesses including an grocery store, bakery, flour mill, harness shop, doctor's office and school. During the late 19th century through most of the 20th century, Gardner experienced significant growth due to its location within walking distance (or less) of many major cities such as Boston proper as well as Worcester and Springfield MA In 1888-89 when it became apparent that electric lighting would soon become common throughout North America it was decided that there should be an electric company established in Gardner for the benefit of all citizens In 1916-17 when World War I began local leaders expressed interest in providing military supplies to their town In 1922 when newly elected Mayor James Hickey proposed that tax money be set aside for public works projects such as paving streets etc.,the idea caught on In 1954 when Governor Ayer approved plans by local officials to build a new high school complete with athletic fields adjoining Gardners old high school which had been abandoned for years
Gardner was first settled in 1630 by the Winthrop family. The town was named for John Gardner, a signer of the Mayflower Compact. In 1868, it became a part of Springfield.
