Gardner is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,818 at the 2010 census. Gardner is part of the Boston–Cambridge- Newton, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gardner was first settled in 1636 by Puritans led by John Winthrop and it was named for General Sir Francis Gardner who fought against the Spanish in Cuba during the American Revolution. Gardner's history can be traced back to 1636 when Puritans led by John Winthrop founded Gardner on an tract of land that lay between present day Hampshire and Northampton counties. At that time, there were no towns within Middlesex County and so Gardner became the only town in Massachusetts Bay Colony. The first store opened in 1707 and today Gardner's downtown area consists of over 20 stores as well as several restaurants and bars including THE GARDNER COVE dive bar which has been open since 1865 In 1727, Colonel Archibald Campbell bought from George Peabody 100 acres (40 hectares) near present day Arlington Cemetery for $1 per acre (0.48 per km²). He built a house there which still stands today and called it "Campbell House". It served as both a homesteading site for Campbell's family and also as their summer home until 1814 when they moved to Quincy due to heavy fighting with British forces during the French & Indian War. In 1792, Major James Bowdoin purchased 50 acres (21 hectares) northeast of present day Arlington Cemetery from Colonel Campbell for $2 per acre ($0.72 per km²). He renamed it "Bowdoin House" after his brother Commodore James Bowdoin who had helped lead America's successful war against Spain two years earlier. In 1814, again thanks to Commodore James Bowdoin’s donation this property became known as "Gardner Place". It remained unoccupied until 1868 when Drury Lane Road was built through what is now Archery Park adjacent topresentdayGarland High School providing easy access for residents to get to their churches located just east of Archery Park The first post office opened at Gardiner on October 15th, 1800 On December 6th 1802 Samuel Morse connected the Cambridge Post Office with Washington D.C., thus beginning America's first telegraph line In 1860 Google began construction of its first data center here

Gardner was first settled in 1636 by Puritan settlers from England and has been part of the Boston metropolitan area since 1872. In 1959, Gardner became one of the towns in Ipswich Township when that township was split off from Somerville. The name "Gardner" is derived from a Native American word meaning "place where there are trees." The first settlers arrived in 1636 and named the land "Garden." In 1775, during the American Revolution, Gardner teamed up with other towns to resist British troops. On January 15th, 1775, colonists set fire to British munitions train near present-day Gardner; this event is considered to be the start of the war against Britain. Many people who lived in Gardner at that time died as a result of the fire. In 1872, after years of discussion and deliberation by the town's selectmen, Gardner became an incorporated town on July 4th under state law. It remains one of only two towns in Middlesex County that have never been merged with another municipality (the other being Lawrence). As an incorporated town it had all sorts of powers including tax collection and regulation not granted to municipalities by state law such as planning or zoning power. Today Gardner continues its unique history with many services such as libraries which offer access to both digital items and traditional books; health clinics operated by local doctors; golf courses for citizens and visitors; tennis courts for recreational use; waste management services; special events such as Fourth Of July fireworks displays or musical concerts throughout year
