Ayer and Simeon Noyes; it closed around 1861 because of financial difficulties caused by gold discoveries near Concord beginning that year. A new store was built on Park Street in 1865 by Augustus Earle Dodge; it remains open today as Dunkin' Donuts across from Main Street Park Library & Museum complex (). In 1870, Butterfield Station opened on State Road 7 about one mile east of where Main Street library now stands; butterfield trains ran through this station until 1957 when they were replaced by Amtrak service from Springfield to Boston via Worcester . From 1970 to 1978, Gardner also had a branch library located at University Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue known as "Gardner-Framingham". In 1979 Gilbert Ritchey took over operations of both branches after he bought them from Dowling-Merrill Corporation parent company Emerson Electric Company; since then operations have been operated jointly under the name Emerson-Gilbert Ritchey Branch Library System (). Garner's only shopping center is located on Union Square off South Huntington Drive ().
