Gardner is the smallest of the five towns in Worcester County and one of the most rural. It lies on the southern border of Worcester County and borders Indian Hill to the northwest and Easton to the northeast. The first settlers in Gardner were Gideon Gardner and his wife Hannah who arrived from England in 1781. They founded a small farm west of present-day Gardner where they raised chickens and pigs until 1812 when they moved eastward to what is now Upton. Gardner is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Gardner was first settled by English colonists in 1639. The town was founded on the east bank of the River Danube, about two miles (3 km) north of modern-day Springfield, by John Gardner and his brother James Gardner. The first post office in Gardner opened in 1796. Because of its location near the river, it became an important trade center for goods moving upstream and downstream from New England during the late 18th century. In 1802, Gardner's neighbor to the south, Westborough, merged with Gardner to form a new town called Westborough Village. However, because both towns were located on opposite banks of the river and only had a population of around 100 people each at that time, they never got along very well and eventually disbanded their merger into separate villages again. In 1814–1815, George Washington visited Gardner while he was campaigning for president and stopped there on his way back upriver to Boston after victory over British forces at Yorktown Heights. This event is sometimes credited as being one of the first instances where Ulysses S Grant met President Washington firsthand. In 1854–1855 local farmers went on strike against what they saw as unfair price increases by their local postmaster general(-s). A large crowd gathered outside his home to demand reform; when no change was forthcoming they started marching down North street to South street until they reached Post Office Square where they sat until evening without getting any redress or satisfaction from their agent or authorities involved: this led to what is now known as "Gardner's Riots". Oneday after this protest another group of farmers marched all night down North Street towards Post Office Square but when same events did not transpire this time around people began calling themselves "First Regiment Patriots" which eventually led to full independence from Eastborough Village when those same officials repealed all prices raised earlier that year
