Gardner is named for General Tom Gardner who had been an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settler in Gardner was Samuel Putnam who arrived in 1636. He and his wife built a cabin on what is now Putnam Hill. In 1641, Jabez Winn took possession of land that later became Gardner. He and his family erected a small log house on what is now South Main Street. In 1795, John Trumbull organized the town of Bridgewater which included parts of what are now Gardner and North Salem. On November 1, 1802, Gardner incorporated as a town under the name of "Gardner". It became an independent municipality on April 15, 1903 when it merged with North Salem to form Adams Township. On February 14, 1916, local voters passed a resolution urging the United States government to recognize Palestine as an international country because of its strategic location between Europe and Asia Minor; this resolution failed to receive signature by President Woodrow Wilson but gained support from other nations such as Canada and Australia subsequent to World War I. As result of this effort two days later Gardner Middle School opened its doors to students fromPalestine who were then being educated in nearby Boston through public schools operated by that city or through private institutions such as Mount Holyoke College until 1948 when all public education within Palestine was closed by Israel following their victory over neighboring Egypt in that war.. In 1960-1961 several homes near Main Street & Cemetery Road burned down due arson attributed to teenagers associated with the youth group Battle Hounds which then resided at one home adjacent to where Main Street meets Cemetery Road (now part of Route 128). No one was found responsible for these fires however residents have stated they believe someone may have wanted revenge against those involved in bringing about peace and understanding between Israelis/Palestinians living side-by-side
