At that time, handguns were not yet common in America as they were only available to members of the British military or those who purchased them from Spanish traders. In 1865, George E. Smith and Sons opened a firearms factory here which became one of the most important centers for ammunition production in Massachusetts until its closure due to lack of demand from consumers during the late 1990s recession. During this time period, gun dealers located across the street from Smith & Sons Firearms Factory would sell ammunition products direct to consumers instead of through formal distributors like Winchester or Remington which offered larger discounts on their products

The town was first settled in 1796 by refugees from Rhode Island who were displaced after the French and Indian War. The original name of the town was "Fenway". It was renamed Gardner in 1827 when Samuel Gardner became its first mayor. Gardner had a post office from 1834 to 1865. It lost its post office status on July 1, 1965, due to consolidation with neighboring Fenway. On December 8, 1897, President Grover Cleveland delivered his famous Speech on the National Mall in Washington D.C., which began "And now I want you all to know that there are three towns in this country – two in New England and one right here in Worcester County." In response to this speech and others like it during his presidency (see List of speeches by Grover Cleveland), Gardner voted for him twice: once on November 3rd and again on December 5th. During World War II, Gardner played an important role as an airfield for bombers attacking enemy targets across Europe. The local paper reported that “the night sky over Gardnershire” looked “a beautiful black velvet than ever before” because of raids flown from nearby RAF Mildenhall airfield during 1944-1945; these attacks helped increase public awareness about Bomber Command’s offensive against Nazi Germany). Additionally it played host to numerous Army Air Forces training flights throughout 1945/46 preparatory for Operation Crossroads which would lead to Hiroshima 65 years later; this event also served as a morale booster for local residents who watched fighter planes strafe cities such as Berlin and Dresden thoughtlessly without consequence or warning (some examples include 1Lt James Beveridge killed flying over Dresden on August 15th 1945).
