Gardner is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,852 at the 2000 census. Gardner is part of the Springfield-Westfield, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to explore Gardner was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after one of his own ships, the "Verrazano", which he sighted on an extended voyage from Venice to North America. In 1636 the first English settlement in what is now Gardner was established by Captains John Winthrop and Bayard Whipple as part of Plymouth Colony. After staying for only a year they founded a new colony at Gloucester Plantation about northwest of present-day Gardner. A second English settlement also existed briefly in what is now Gardner before being abandoned in 1639 due to Indian difficulties with land grants and problems with malaria mosquitos. Only two years later were both settlements abandoned when frontiersmen discovered new areas for colonization and moved into them instead. One reason why there was little permanent English population growth until after early colonists left is that there were no rivers or other major waterways within easy reach for either side of the Atlantic Ocean. In fact, navigation between these two coasts was accomplished by sailing upriver or wading through flooded coastal marshes during periods of high water
