The armory was one of the first gunsmiths’ shops in America and became a major center for ammo production throughout much of pre-war America. In 1916, General Electric began producing ammunition at their new facility adjacent to the armory. Ammunition production continued until 1978 when all operations were consolidated at GE's old Warwick plant near Hartford, Connecticut.
