Franklin is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Braintree–Fenway Combined Statistical Area. The first European to visit the area now known as Franklin was John Winthrop in 1630. His party explored what is now northeastern Massachusetts and found many natural resources including fish, game, and land that could be used for farming. The English colony of Rhode Island was established nearby in 1644 and soon after traders from England began to explore the area around Franklin. In 1668, General John Winthrop led an expedition into what is now Massachusetts Bay to find new lands for his colony. He named the place "Franklin" after his friend and fellow explorer Sir George Frisby who had been with him on this trip. From here, colonists began looking for a site where they could build a permanent settlement while continuing their exploration of the region around Boston Harbor which they called "New England". In 1692, James II of England granted Royal License No 2 to establish a proprietary company called "The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" by granting it exclusive rights to trade with all parts of North America north of Spain's Strait of Gibraltar In 1700s there were few people living near present day Franklin because most people lived closer to Boston or New York City. However when large estates were bought up in Quincy (now Quincy Market) and other areas around Boston Migration started happening from these areas towards Franklin where opportunities for employment were available . As more opportunity became available people started moving back into those areas creating larger villages like Quincy then smaller villages such as Farmington . By 1820s about 75%of residents lived in some form of village or suburb outside the boundaries defined by roads or townships
