The town of Franklin, Massachusetts was chartered in 1795 by the General Court of Plymouth and is located on the border of Plymouth and Worcester counties. The first settler in Franklin was Samuel Seward and his family who arrived in 1798. In 1802, John Greenough came to the area and erected a sawmill on the river that became known as Greenough's Mill. In 1825, Isaac Morse built a gristmill on the river that became known as Morse's Mill. By 1830, there were three mills in Franklin with an average daily production of 50 bushels of flour. In 1832, Amos Kendall founded Kendall & Hancock lumberyards which produced lumber for homes, schools, churches and other institutions throughout New England. In 1848, Boston-born Abijah Chandler purchased majority interest in Kendall & Hancock lumberyards from Amos Kendall and began producing finished wood products such as doors and windows at his factories in Newton and Franklin. From 1850 until 1865 he was also president of the board of directors for the Merchants National Bank (now part of JPMorgan Chase) in Franklin. During this time period he also founded several small businesses including a grocery store near Independence Hall which served as headquarters for many local organizations during colonial times including trade guilds (further evidence that commercial activity played an important role early in town development). In 1865 Chapman retired from business ownership to spend more time with his wife who had married him two years earlier while he still held minority ownership stake in Kendall & Hancock lumberyards. They lived there until her death in 1902; then they moved to Quincy where she died four years later aged 90 years old. Their son David Chapman took over management of their businesses until his death in 1962 followed by daughter Jane Chapman Cotton who continued operations after her father's death until 1985 when it was sold to Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation . After 1985 it reverted back to its original name: The Lancaster Manufacturing Company

The area now known as Franklin County was first settled by the Abenakis who were forced out of their land by the English. The area became part of Massachusetts in 1692 when England granted it to the Dutch. On January 25, 1776, during the American Revolution, Benjamin Franklin signified his support for independence with a speech inPhiladelphia. In 1777, he moved to Boston and quickly rose through the ranks of Massachusetts politics. He became an alderman (aldermen are City Council members) in 1780 and then Mayor of Boston in 1784. In this role, he helped lead Boston through its financial crisis and came up with innovative policies that saved the city from bankruptcy. After winning reelection as Mayor in 1802-04, he served two terms as President of Harvard University before retiring at age 70 in 1809. Franklin is considered one of America's most renowned political figures and has been honored with numerous awards including an honorary degree from Yale University and a plaque placed outside his home in Quincy Market District
Franklin was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1776 as a small village on the present-day site of Boston. The town quickly grew, and in 1800 it had a population of over 10,000. In 1812, Boston was renamed to Franklin after the founding president. The town’s growth continued until its incorporation as a city in 1903.
