Franklin is a town in Franklin County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 6,936 at the 2010 census. A post office called "Franklin" was established at this location on December 15, 1795; it remained open until 1888. The town's first school was established by President John Adams in 1798; it operated briefly before being moved to what is now State House Square where it remains today. Franklinsburgh Academy (now part of Harvard University) opened its doors for learning in 1802 and became one of the country's premier educational institutions under Presidents James Kappes (1834-1839), Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.(1892-1901), and Calvin Coolidge (1912-1925). In 1830, William Ellery Channing organized a meeting within the limits of Franklin which led to establishment of Chauncey Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge Amongst Men which still exists today as an international research organization devoted exclusively to advancing knowledge through education among men
