Fitchburg is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,741 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston–Manchester- Nahant Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fitchburg was first settled in 1721 by Captain John Fitch and his wife Anne Chapman. The original site of the town was on the east side of Fitch Brook, near present-day Arlington Street and Centre Street. In 1728, Nicholas Boylston located a meeting house in what is now downtown Fitchburg to accommodate increasing population growth within the town limits. The first school in Fitchburg was built in 1753 and operated by Rev. Phillip Handler until it burned down in 1824. A new school building was erected on Center Street between King and Well Streets in 1827 and served as both schools for Fitchburg until 1865 when it became known as "Northampton Female Academy." During this time period there were also two taverns, one called "The Griffin" on Arlington Street and another called "The Tavern" on Well Street; both were owned by local citizens until they were taken over by higher government officials during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. An important event from early history to which many people are still particularly mindful occurs every year on November 8th: The General Election Day Parade honoring our governor, Lord Francis Macdonald (1869-1937). This parade usually begins at First Congregational Church where members will line up along South Main street chanting patriotic songs beginning with “Give me Liberty or Give Me Death” followed by “Marching to Freedom” then “Electioneering Song” before finally arriving at City Hall steps for a display of banners and marching bands led by Mayor.] In 1855 an agreement was reached between Mr. Potter & Messrs Roper Brothers merchants who had opened a store opposite Northampton Female Academy & committee of selectmen forming Business Committee to erect Free School building which would be dedicated Dec 1st 186 5th class being admitted free . [This building still stands today on Greenfield Avenue just northwest of Interstate 93.] On January 1st 1861 due to increased demand for education services offered by Northampton Female Academy Government Board decided that Free School should be maintained separate from Normal School but sharing same quarters with Normal School under its name . By 1870 it became evident that Free School could not meet all needs so Normal School Buildings were sold & turned into housing units] In 1892 Second Empire style brick schoolhouse (demolished) replaced former structure which stood across from Market Square Library complex now occupied by State House Annex office tower] On October 2nd 1896 Wm Ellis Storeiro died suddenly leaving wife Julia 3 children aged 7 thru 10 years old widow becoming headmistress ofNormalSchool]. Mrs Ellis continued teaching regular day classes evenings/weekends while husband stayed home with children during weekdays] In 1914 Mrs Ellis resigned after 25 years service effective Nov 15th 1914[After succumbing to tuberculosis which she had contracted while teaching second grade students at NormalSchool][EB&J Still active as headmistress emeritus currently resides at 339 Greenfield Ave., walking distance from EB&J's childhood home originally built for family back around 1850 - Google Maps ]. Mrs Ellis' death left vacant seat on Gentry Educational District Board effective Nov 15th 1916 resulting in election of James Ewing Jr.(Class III) who served unexpired term ending May 11th 1919[EB&J passing away Dec 14th 1961 aged 98 years old]. His son James Ewing III took over running Elementary Department starting Jan 1st 1922[James having attained majority status being elected co-director Oct 20TH 1923 having held position since 1912]. The town also contains several smaller villages: Albion, Bardsville, Brookline-Winthrop, Dalton-Lanesborough, Easton-Middlesex Junction, Forbes Mills Landing, Gnadenhuttenville Joint Base Campground/Dalton Air Force Base Annex/Finch Point Naval Station/Granite Falls Waterfowl Refuge Complex/, Haskell Falls Reservoir Park (), Jenkins Pond (), LaFontaine Reservoir (), Littlefield Pond () and White Sands Beach ().
Fitchburg, Massachusetts was founded in 1635 by Nicholas Fitch and his family. The town grew quickly after being designated as a rural outpost of Boston. In 1800, the town had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1840, the town had a population of over 2,000 people and by 1860 it had reached 4,500 people. The downtown area was developed around 1875 into what is now known as Fitchburg Square. In 1898, the townshipping status of Fitchburg was revoked because it failed to file annual tax returns with the state government for two years consecutive seasons. This led to increased competition from neighboring towns in the region and resulted in a decline in business activity within the town during this time period. In 1905, an unsuccessful attempt was made to annex Amherst which then led to annexation by Fitchburg itself adjacent to its eastern border on Saturday morning February 15th 1907. By this point though, Amherst's economy overshadowed that of Fitchburg due to its larger stature and more sophisticated infrastructure including schools and businesses adipating Amherst's population at about 5% while Fitchburg's percentage stood at only 3%.
