Fitchburg is a town in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hampden County. The first permanent settler in Fitchburg was Nicholas Warner who arrived in 1764. In 1803, Reverend John Scott and his family founded the First Baptist Church which still meets today. In 1830, Fitchburg became a part of Worcester County and by 1840 had a population of 1,000 people. However due to an act of the General Court passed that year, all towns within Worcester County except for Fitchburg were given to Hampshire County as part of a land reform movement begun by Governor Elbridge Gerry. This created some tension between the two counties as there was always resentment over this change. Fitchburg remained part of Hampshire until it became its own county in 1851 under statehood laws passed by Congress following the American Civil War. Since then it has seen steady growth with 4 annexations: Westborough (1957), Northampton (1978), Pittsfield (2005) and Holyoke (2015). Fitchburg was first settled in 1636 by English colonists and named for Nicholas Fitch, the governor of Rhode Island and British North America from 1635 to 1638. In 1786, it became a part of New England and was renamed Fitchburg after James Fitch, an American Revolutionary War general who fought on the British side. The town's nickname "The Harvard of the Massachussets" comes from its being one of only two towns in New England (along with Westborough) to be chartered as a free school in 1803. In 1908 it voted to become an incorporated municipality. In 1916, Fitchburg annexed nearby Whiteford and began construction on what would become its first high school; it opened in 1917 as Green-Wood School. From then until 2003, when it merged with other towns in Hampshire County to form the current city of Fitchburg proper, Green-Wood served as both high school and municipal center for all six municipalities that made up the former town of Fitchburg proper: Amherst (now Amherst University), Bedford Falls (now Bedford Falls High School), Brookline (now Brookline Academy), Dracut (now Dracut High School), Fall River (then Fall River Union High School), and Raynham (then Raynham Academy). In 2003, however, because most students now attend schools within or nearBoston City Hall rather than Green-Wood Elementary/Middle School,[1]fdchurch merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form Arlington Heights-FITCHBURG City College District No. 1[2]. This merger left Green-Wood Elementary/Middle School without pupils; since then it has been used as an event venue by various business owners who need large spaces without students present during special events such as weddings or boat shows;[3][4] overall enrollment at Green- wood has not increased significantly since 2003 despite this use.[5]
