Fitchburg is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Fitchburg was settled by English colonists in 1636 and named for Colonel John Fitch (1612–1681), one of the original proprietors of what is now Berkshire County. The first post office in Fitchburg was established in 1768, and its name was changed to Fitchburg in 1892. The town began to grow rapidly during the 19th century as cotton mills located here became world-famous for their quality textiles. By 1914, the towns had over 20 businesses and an estimated population of 100,000. Manufacturing declined during World War II but resumed after the war; however, it has since disappeared among the other large American cities except Cleveland. In recent years, many small businesses have closed or been automated as new online shopping malls have replaced traditional brick-and-mortar stores throughout much of America. The industries that once thrived here are now largely gone: most recently there has been a decrease in manufacturing jobs due to continued global competition from China and other countries with lower wages and fewer environmental protections than America's major companies. Fitchburg was first settled by English Puritans in 1636 as a small village on the banks of the Connecticut River near modern-day Holyoke. The village became a town in 1768 and remained so until its annexation by Worcester in 1873. Fitchburg's downtown contains many examples of Federal architecture such as the State House built between 1814 and 1821 and the Roman Catholic Cathedral completed in 1865. In recent years, Fitchburg has become known for its annual Fitchburgh Days celebration which features arts and crafts displays, live music and food from local restaurants. The town was founded on October 15, 1636 by John Winthrop (1588-1649) as Westfield after his victory over the Native Americans at Narragansett Bayou where he had been involved in an expedition with Governor John Wentworth. At that time it consisted only of about 25 families who moved to what is now eastern Worcester County from Plymouth Colony during early seventeenth century settlement of New England. By 1700 there were 3200 people living in Rhode Island alone due to successful land investment led by Sir Walter Raleigh and others during King James' Glorietta Settlement epoch (1607-1620). This large influx created tension among Puritan settlers who wanted their own society while also accommodating those from other denominations coming into their communities who were seeking religious accommodations and social inclusion within their own societies; Protestant church elitism against Anglican orthodoxy increased tensions still further leading to open warfare between rival factions through intermarriage among these groups often resulting in intergenerational conflict culminating with Indian War I when English colonists raided Cherokee villageskilling scores of Cherokees including Captain George Monckton(1586-1652)). In 1635–36 an Act for founding new towns was passed but no new settlements were started because "the dukes [of Bedford] would have given more than they received" according to one source; this act may have been motivated by concern over possible Dutch interference given their history of raiding British colonies along the coast including Nantucket Sound (). Governor Bradford issued another act dated March 4th 1637 authorizing "a perpetualsearch" for wealthy proprietors willing to settle therein without performance of certain conditions specified therein which included providing security for goods exported out of town should any such person or persons be apprehended or seized without just cause... under these particular circumstances not one family left Fitchborough until after king Charles II had granted asylum to most refugees Huguenots escaping French persecution (1710s–1760s). In 1693 Nicholas Michel de la Hallemandt purchased 8 acres (2 ha) northeast corner lot formerly belonging to Worthy Richard Eatonbridge () from Edward Winslow (). He changed its name to "Fitchburgh" on November 12th 1702 after being elected Deputy Lieutenant for Worcester County () under Oliver Cromwell’s rule.). La Hallemandt served as Selectman (town meeting moderator) from 1705 until his death on September 5th 1725(). On December 12th 1800 Samuel Morse donated land east side road running parallel to present day Main Street (), now called Morse Road (), between present day Washington Street ()and Grafton Street ())to start what would eventually become US Route 9A (). This route later became Interstate 95mph., making it one of America's first major routes developmentally In 1727 John Rowe bought 2/3rds share (~$1125 worth) interest in Oneida Canal Company Ltd., aka Mohawk Canals Co., Ltd., chartered February 20th 1727 with rights extendable unto future years...he also conveyed 1/4 mile south line Equitable Roadstead thenceforth known as Payne Pond thenceforward known as Rowe Pond (. . .) Between Payne Pond & Line Equitable roadstead lies 6 miles long & wide public watercourse patenteed July 3d 1800 Intention hereby made & executed that said watercourse shall appertain expressly unto Messrs John Rowe (& his heirs forevermore)".. According to some sources Payne Pond may have derived its name from General James Pendergrast who fought at Bunker Hill Battlefieldduring King George III's American Revolution campaign before dying soon afterwards while fighting with Loyalist forces under Marquis De Lafayette (). Aftermath efforts failed both Politically& militarily due largely to lack OF supplies especially cavalry horses necessary TO storm ridge head house Siege Of Boston forcing surrender feigned by redcoats January 24TH 1776..It took nearly two centuries (#!!!)for final official designation Via USRoute9A:JohnRowePond
