From 1951 until 1970, Vickers Plastics Group was headquartered in London; however, most operations remained in Fitchburg until 1978 when they moved to Springfield MA permanently. In 1978, Vickers sold its Breda ranged armaments business to Dutch conglomerate Unilever plc.; however control over Scope Mount manufacturing reverted back to British based Hischorn & Heintzelman Ltd., which continue production until 1997 when it merged into Lord Coates's Brownells plc.. Today there are three main divisions within Brownells: optics/camera equipment; firearms; and repair/restoration supplies/accessories - all of which produce scope mounts at their respective factories throughout the UK mainland (and some overseas locations). Fitchburg, Massachusetts is a small town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Fitchburg was founded in 1764 by Captain John Fitch and his wife Susannah Westfall as a trading post on the Wachusett River. The first settler in what is now Fitchburg was Aaron Winslow, who came in 1768 from Saybrook Colony. In 1812, General David Hunter established a military post here after invading Canada and finding that British forces were weak near Boston. After the war ended, settlers arrived to continue farming and trade with Native Americans and other nations around this region. In 1800s, Fitchburg began expanding into areas now known as South Wachusett Valley and North Wachusett Valley. By 1810-1811 there were three buildings within one mile of each other - an inn (now gone), a storehouse (now standing) and a schoolroom (now destroyed). On July 4th 1814 Samuel Eliot Morison wrote "A Narrative of His Voyage from Europe to America" while aboard HMS Beagle during her circumnavigation of the world. Morison's journal covers his journey from Plymouth Rock on England's southeast coast to Table Mountain on South Africa before continuing on through Cape Horn to North America over Juan de la Cruz Pass between Tierra del Fuego and Antarctica – completing his round-the-world voyage in 174 days! Today marks 50 years since that incredible event occurred; little has changed about life in or around this once vibrant community…. except for its growing population!
