In 1792, Nathaniel Fitchburg became the first incorporated town in Massachusetts. It was chartered on February 3, 1792 with a population of 10 people. The original site of the town was on the east side of present day Fitchburg, between Northampton and Lexington Streets. On May 14, 1801, the Town voted to annex part of Lexington County and renamed it Fitchburg County. On December 6, 1847, President James K. Polk signed Executive Order No. 9226 which increased U.S.$1 million in United States military appropriations for the year ahead by 5%. This order also called for $200 thousand in expenditures for armaments and improvements to fortifications throughout the United States including $60 thousand for equipment at Boston Harbor. The towns in Hampshire county were consolidated into Fitchburg on January 1st 1870 under an act of Congress known as The Consolidation Act (2 Statutes at Large No. 369). At this time there were 16 towns in Hampshire county with a total population of 382 people; however only 7 had been annexed into Fitchburg when consolidation took place: Amherst (July 1st 1870), Bedford (July 1st 1870), Burlington (August 15th 1870), Danvers (October 4th 1870), Goffstown (November 2nd 1871), Haverhill (December 12th 1871) and Worcester (January 11th 1872). Fitchburg was chartered to be a municipality on November 8th 1912 with a population of 1800 people but did not join until 1913 due to opposition from other municipalities that wanted their own charter rights granted retroactive to 1911 . In 1917-1918 there was an arms race between Great Britain and Germany over control of strategic waterways along the English Channel called "the Grand Canal". After months of skirmishes and bombing raids by both sides one major battle resulted when two British warships were sunk near Calais while trying to cross the canal using their torpedoes against German destroyers operating from bases inside France
Fitchburg is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 7,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Fitchburg is named for James Fitch, an American Revolutionary War captain and member of Parliament from Rhode Island. In 1786 he donated land to the town on which it stands. The first building in Fitchburg was built by Captain John Wilson in 1792 and was used as a meetinghouse until 1820 when a new structure was built which still stands today as the Administration Building. In 1825, Rev. George Higginson purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land around present-day Fitchburg and began building what would become known as "The Higginson Farm". This farm continues to be one of the most significant agricultural properties in Plymouth County and has been called "the mother lode" for its production of wheat, corn, soybeans, oats, potatoes etc.. Today it is home to over 100 dairy cows and more than 60 pigs! It wasn’t until 1877 that commercial agriculture became important here with the opening of The Cement Works by Julius Meyer & Sons which manufactured concrete products. This led to what is now known as “The cement capital of New England” because of this company’s extensive production capabilities across all product lines including asphaltpaving; roadbuilding; culverts; redepotters; roofing systems; flooring systems;and more! In 1922-23 Fitchburg hosted one of the longest running annual state fairs in New England having been held every year since then except for 1959-60 due to World War II disruptions during which time the town was evacuated .
