The city also lost some key businesses during this time: Battle Creek Brewery closed down due to competition from beer brewed in neighboring towns; Amoskeag Manufacturing ceased operations after being purchased by New England Brewing Company; while Gourley's Shoes went bankrupt because customers switched to shoes made elsewhere before they could be delivered through Fitchburg's mail service.
