Fitchburg, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Fitchburg was chartered on February 26, 1786 by General John Glover as a farmstead for his brother-in-law Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Fenton and others. Dr. Benjamin Rush discovered oxygen in 1792 while exploring Fitchburg Swamp and brought its importance to the town's development. The first store opened in 1802 and by 1805 there were ten stores in the community. In 1830–1832, George Washington visited Fitchburg while campaigning for president; he stayed at the home of Judge Samuel Fenton until March 3 of that year when he boarded with Major Nathaniel Hawthorne at an inn near today's Meetinghouse Hill Road and walked back to Boston via present day Arlington Cemetery where he died nine days later on April 14th due to advanced gout disease. In 1840, labor troubles led to mob action throughout the community and five people were killed; this event helped spur economic development within the community which included a sawmill and grist mill soon after opening. After World War II many new homes were built in what is now downtown Fitchburg including one of America's largest shopping malls called "The mall". In 1957 local entrepreneur Don Lennon started "Amherst" magazine here becoming one of America’s leading collegiate media brands with over 100 editions published annually across 16 campuses across Amherst University, MIT (the world’s most prestigious university), Emerson College and Brown University Today much of downtown has been preserved as it once was with remnants such as original post office building still standing In 1933 modernizing regulations mandated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt caused some residents to leave their homes during what is known locally as “The Great Depression” although there wasn't anything preventing businesses from continuing operations without any changes or additional regulation from management During WWII a large munitions plant was built just outside town which again contributed significantly to growth although little remains today of that plant

Fitchburg is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The people of Fitchburg are known as "The Hub" for their many cultural and economic connections to Boston. Fitchburg was founded by thirteen colonists from England in 1723 as a small trading post on the fast-flowing Wachusett River. In 1854, when it became a city, it annexed the neighboring town of North Adams. Fitchburg's rich history can be found in its nearly two centuries of growth and commerce. In 1723, thirteen English colonists arrived in what is now Hampshire County and founded what would become Fitchburg. They named their new settlement after John Fitch who had helped lead an expedition that discovered the river's origin and potential for trade with Native Americans. Over time, other traders and entrepreneurs followed suit and started selling goods such as flour, soapstone, iron ore, cheese and pork to local farmers and merchants along the river’s banks. By 1830, there were over fifty businesses operating in downtown Fitchburg! In 1854, when it became a city under statehood (it had been incorporated as a village back in 1845), Fitchburg added North Adams to its list of residents. This coincided with increased traffic onto Route 128 due to industrial growth throughout western Massachusetts during this time period - both within town limits as well as out into surrounding villages including Randolph MA., Lawrence MA., Ipswich MA., Quincy MA., Brockton MA., Wareham MA., Norwood MA., Springfield MA & more! Today’s economy isdriven by healthcare services (including patient care facilities like Brigham & Women’s Hospital) – major employers include AT&T Wireless & Verizon Wireless – education (including four universities; Hampshire College; Northeastern University; Simmons College; Amherstuploaded Architecture) – multifaceted retail anchored by several large anchor stores including Macy’s(!) & Sears(!), restaurants like Ruby Tuesday(!), Dunkin Donuts(!), BJ's Chili Bowl(!) & more all located within easy walking distance of one another…the hub has really come alive thanks to some great initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Domenic Sarno over the past few years!
Fitchburg was founded in 1636 by Samuel Fitch and his family. The town became a major shipping and whaling center during the eighteenth century, and experienced a rapid growth during the early days of the American Revolution. In 1812, Fitchburg was renamed for General James K. Polk, then U.S. Secretary of War. The town's heavy industry declined after World War II, but has since revived with a growing population and an expanding economy.
