Fitchburg is part of the Boston metropolitan area and the Fenway Park neighborhood. The town of Fitchburg was first settled by English colonists in 1636. It was chartered as a town on April 12, 1852, from parts of neighboring Maynard and Framingham townships. The name is derived from the historic site of Fitch's Ferry across the river tooston (now Quincy). In 1868, the Connecticut Railroad built a line through Fitchburg to Northampton; this made it possible for people living near Hartford to trade with those in New England without going downriver. This helped make Fitchburg one of the most important economic communities in Middlesex County during its early years. The Town Meeting House burned down in 1889 and never been rebuilt but still stands as a local historical landmark today. In 1916, when Massachusetts became an independent country under President Woodrow Wilson’s new system of government, Fitchburg became part of that nation too. Finchburgh State Park opened in 1922 as a scenic spot featuring rolling hills and ponds surrounded by woods on both sides of Route 9W between Lebanon and Winthrop Streets NW. The park has since been enlarged to include portions bordering Arlington Heights on one side and Waltham on the other side which together form an 8 acre tract around which are located more than 20 hiking trails providing views not only out over Interstate 95 but also into Bedford Hills across Center Street towards Newton Centre National Historical Park nestled among tall trees just east of Route 9W open space known locally as “The Woods” off Highway 9W between Arlington Heights Boulevard NE and Winthrop Street NW where there is now a large shopping center also located adjacent to I-95 access road with more than 100 parking spaces available within short walking distance including several restaurants located inside what used to be an active textile mill dating back before World War II

Fitchburg is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 16,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Newton, MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fitchburg has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years and was settled by English colonists in 1636. The town was named after Colonel James Fitch, who had purchased land in what is now Fitchburg from the Wampanoag tribe. The first post office in town was established in 1768, and remains open today. Fitchburg became incorporated as a town on April 14, 1892. The towns of Northampton and Holyoke were merged into Fitchburg on January 1st, 1959; however Holyoke remains an independent municipality with its own government and police department. FITCHBURG’S HISTORY In 1636 the English colonists founded the Town of Ipswich (now Quincy) on the site of modern-day Fitchburg after purchasing land from the Wampanoag tribe for £10 sterling per acre (about $165 U.S.). Colonel James Fitch led this group of settlers and soon achieved success selling goods to Indian traders across New England. By 1768 there were three Posts operating within present-day Fitchburg – one owned by John Goodwin (a signer of the Declaration of Independence), one leased to Amos Kendall (the first mayor), and one operated jointly by both posts under direction of Captains Nathaniel Hawthorne and John Hartwell until their sale to Richard Ladd in 1798 which shortened operations to two weeks due to winter factors). A “First settler” account written circa 1800 states: “We set out early this morning & arrived here about 7 oclock last night […] We are but few families but we have got a good soil so that we may hope for better things hereafter” In 1892 incorporation as a town followed suit with voters approving 3/4ths ($2) against 1/4th ($1) majority ordinance submitted by selectmen Nathanial Hawthorne (D), Amos Kendall (I), Captain Richard Ladd(R) & Jeremiah Sibley (C). This event marked an important milestone for residents as it afforded them municipal rights not enjoyed by neighboring towns such as Northampton or Holyoke which had been formed separately only six months earlier via merger ballot results impossible for officials to track given lack of record keeping capabilities then or even now! FITCHBURG MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT As mentioned before incorporation granted citizens municipal rights not enjoyed by neighboring towns such as Northampton or Holyoke which had been formidably organized independently only six months earlier albeit through merger ballot results technically impossible for officials to track given lack of record keeping capabilities then or even now! To date there has never been another local election held within our boundaries taking place outside Of Authority Permitting Streetscapes And Landscaping Downtown Which Would Be A Majorcomplication But Also Perhaps An Advantage Should More Residents Who Live Outside Of Our Boundaries Come Forward To VOTE BY MEETING TOO! On November 5th 2014 thrutown selectmen Nathanial Hawthorne & Amos Kendall put together an ordinance proposing changes/amendments made thereto pursuant to section 8A Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 148 Section 2 [amending sections 2-5] that passed unanimously 11-5 without objection
