Kendall renamed it the Commonwealth National Bank - one of only six national banks founded outside Boston during this time frame (the others being The First National Bank of Philadelphia (1833), The Second National Bank of Cincinnati (1835), The Third National Bank of Hartford (1838), and American Trust Company at Kansas City (1901). In 1861, through investments by George Pullen and others, Fitchburg became home to America's first insurance company when Western Reserve Life Ins Co., predecessor to Allstate Brothers Casualty & Surety Co., was organized here with offices located at 100 High Street and 10 Union Street until 1898 when they relocated to 219 Main Street #2A in modern day Quincyport where they remain today. During World War I local patriotism led to production at local mills such as Hoechst Corp.'s paper plant that produced military uniforms for soldiers on leave; munitions plants such as Bethlehem Steel’s war shipyard that manufactured artillery rounds; hydraulic fracturing operations conducted by Anadarko Petroleum beneath gas wells drilled by Royal Dutch Shell; or food processing including Canning Works Cooperative Grocery Corporation's creation of milk pails outfitted with an automatic water dispenser which helped reduce waste disposal costs associated with traditional methods such as manual labor inside ovens or open pits without proper drainage systems during cold weather months..
