The first target in Fitchburg was a two-pounder cannonball that was used to shoot atftiles from a small private field on Main Street. The cannons were used during the Revolutionary War to defend against British attack. After the war, the area became known as “the green hill” because of the high concentration of artillery pieces located thereabouts. In 1819, Captain Augustus Deane donated land on which he built a large rifle range and pistols range. These ranges were used by local farmers and hunters toshoot at various types of targets including firearms, dogs, pigs, chickens, rabbits and squirrels. In 1854, Colonel Ebenezer Pratt donated land on which four .50 caliber guns were Built as part of a military drill ground for militia purposes only. today these guns are still stationed at Fort Atkinson Park in downtown Fitchburg
