His wife Sarah worshipped at another Congregational church located on Meeting House Hill until her death sometime between 1659 and 1662; she willed her land there to their congregation for religious use only (the first synagogue built in America). A school for boys opened here in 1796 under teacher Mr.(?) Grafton; it continued operation thruout most of the 19th century before being moved to its present location on Union Street about 1840. A girls school followed suit about 1800; it closed around 1875 because of lack of enrollment but remains standing as part of Fitchburg Historical Society Museum collection today. Governor Joseph Warren ordered that all roundabouts be eliminated by 1845 because they caused congestion on state roads while providing no other benefits.
