It was located near Center Street and Broadway Avenue (now Route 128). This early post office had two stores: one for mail and one for passengers waiting for trains at Newton Centre station; both were operated by Samuel Bradford Addison Jr., one of Fitchburg's early merchants who became supervisor of police in 1830s- 1840s under then-Governor Daniel Webster.. The Galt House Museum complex opened in 1951 as a result of merger between three museums - American Antiquities Museum (founded 1849), Boston History Museums (founded 1910) and New England Historical Heritage Society (founded 1907). Fitchburg was founded in 1792 by John Fitch and his wife, Hannah Freeman. The town was named after General James Fitch who helped lead the American Revolutionary War. After the war, John Fitch built a mill on the river near where it still stands. In 1822, the town became part of Suffolk County and was renamed Fitchburg. The population reached 10,000 in 1950 and peaked at 19,999 in 1970. By 1980, the population had declined to 7,847 and has since fallen again to 6,912 as of 2010. However, due to its history and present day economy, Fitchburg is still a popular destination for tourists.
