Fitchburg was founded in 1738 by Captain John Fitch and his family as a trading post on the Great Eastern Road. The post served as an important transportation hub for goods from New England to Boston and from Philadelphia to British colonies in North America. In 1825, Fitchburg became the capital of Norfolk County after its official establishment as an incorporated town. In 1892, it became one of the municipalities within Springfield when that city was formed from parts of two other towns: Fitchburg and Westborough. Just before the American Civil War began in 1861, General Nathaniel Banks ordered Colonel George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit to establish a headquarters at Fitchburg for purposes of coordinating operations with Confederate forces marching through central Massachusetts. The location proved fatal for Custer when his troopers were ambushed near the town on July 14th; five officers and thirty-two men were killed including Custer himself. A local history museum located in downtown Fitchburg tells the story of what happened during that fateful day across several floors of exhibits including artifacts from both Union and Confederate camps; an exhibit on barnraising where local farmers gather materials such as hay and straw for their winter stocks; caskets filled with remains found around town during excavations following the battle; evidence testifing to human sacrifice practiced by Confederates during this time period; and more than fifty vintage cars displayed inside various areas throughout the museum which are open daily except Mondays since July 4th when all museums are closed due to Independence Day observances.
