The town received its name from Colonel John Fitch, an Englishman who purchased land in 1764 as part of a deal that gave him control over all of what is now Rhode Island. In 1814, when New England became a state, Fitchburg became one of its first towns. The town was first built up around a mill known as "Plymouth" which operated until 1827. A new mill, known as the "Finch", was completed in 1829 and soon became one of the most important mills in the area. The mill produced flour for local markets while also exporting flour to other parts of New England and beyond. After several years during which it failed to produce enough flour to meet demand, the "Finch" Mill Company went bankrupt in 1851; however, it reopened two years later under new management with assistance from Society for Promoting Agriculture and Manufactures (SPAM). In 1865, John Wistar erected a large brick building known as "The Mansion" on Main Street adjacent to Parson's School for Boys; this building served as both house and office until 1969 when it was replaced by Brown University's current main building on Main Street (now called Courtyard Towers). In 1898–99 there were significant changes taking place throughout eastern Massachusetts due to rapid industrialization including construction of dams across the Connecticut River near present-day Fitchburg allowing navigation throughriverine areas for shipping purposes.; these same projects also increased traffic along Route 2 making it necessary for access roads to be built specifically for vehicle transportation within Fitchburg limits swamping much older residential neighborhoods adjacent to Route 2/I-95 junction sites bringing about some negative consequences known locally as “The squeeze” or “The Hoodwinkers” phenomenon where homes within walking distance but out of sight experienced very high rates for real estate transactions because developers could no longer charge more than those prices without fear that they would have their property taken away by eminent domain proceedings if they did not agree to sell at such high prices having little hope being able to find buyers willing or able to make such huge down payments particularly during tough economic times After World War II ended with victory over Japan following four years long conflict which left millions dead or displaced persons living among others like himself homeless many people question whether America would actually want another war so soon after defeating an adversary that posed nearly no threat let alone could provide sustained military engagement resources let alone achieve decisive victory leading then President Harry Truman offer $25 million dollars gift package including 5 million acres irrigated with mechanical water turbines providing electricity directly into homes should Roosevelt win reelection becoming only 3rd U S president ever To this day we still do not know if he accepted or used this offer
