The company town was named for Nathaniel Fitch, one of the original investors in the company that would become Ammunition Company of America. The name change came about because at first it was thought that ammunition sales were conducted out of New England and not Boston.

Fitchburg has a rich history dating back to 1724 when it was called "Fitzharbour" after Sir John Fitzharbour, 1st Baronet. In 1803, the town was renamed for James Fitch, an American merchant and statesman who had played a role in helping to create the United States Constitution. Fitchburg is located on what used to be the Quincy-Fitchburg Turnpike (now US Route 128). The turnpike connected Quincy with Leicester and other villages in central Massachusetts. The present-day town of Fitchburg was formed from parts of three other towns: North Adams, Southwick, and Westborough. The first settler in Fitchburg was Nicholas Easton who arrived in 1724 and named it after his late father General Nicholas Easton of Worcester County England. Headed by Colonel Joseph Warren as assistant surveyor general for New England during King George II's America Expedition of 1768-1771, Nathaniel Gage organized what became known as "the First Settlers' Donation". This donation lay out 3 acres (1 km2) east of where today's Main Street stands on land donated by Captain Samuel Eliot Morison on July 4th, 1724 as part of an effort to promote settlement along New England coastal borders by promoting British trade with North America instead of serving through Spain or France. On October 7th following Gage's donation there were 5 males under 25 years old signed into this Agreement which laid out guidelines for future development including: naming streets etc., building fences around parcels within 100 feet (30 m), electing one court judge per township plus interpreter/factotum throughout year; namesakes should erect stone markers near meetingplaces where their deeds were executed; boundaries should continue unchanged until boundary changes are ordered by court It wasn't until 1830 that two roads crossed through town - High Street went north from Market Square while Meeting House Road ran south from Market Square - becoming what are now Wall St./ Meeting House Rd and Main/High St.. In 1836 another road crossed through - White River Road from Lexington Avenue north to Southbridge Avenue south becoming Blue Hill Rd today’s Greenfield Ave.. In 1849 a post office opened at Fitchburgh Lake which continued until 1861 when Kingston station opened up across the river from here . By 1870 there were over 50 residences and businesses clustered around Market Square downtown . A new school system was instituted with Amos Lawrence School being built just northwest of Center Court between 1840-1847 followed by Congregational Academy & Seminary next door between 1850-1854 then Holy Cross Catholic School operated herefrom 1865 until 1903 before being replaced by Hampshire Academy which opened in 1915 In 1860 Rev Nathaniel Gage died leaving behind an estate valued at $100,000 dollars which he divided among his five children including James Purdy Foster III who took over management running the estates until their death in 1933 also inheriting $128,-000 dollarscash value today ..... For more than 350 years since its founding many people have contributed significantly to both social and economic stabilityof this vibrant community.........................
