In 1819, local residents adopted a resolution designating a day annually as "John Forbes Day" in recognition of hisheroism. Fitchburg was originally settled on account of its abundance of good timber and water supplies which led to its early growth as a agricultural community. Timber exports continued to be important until after World War II when agriculture became more prevalently dominant due to increased foreign competition and changing technology.
