Fall River is a town in Massachusetts, United States. The population was 23,285 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Boston metropolitan area. Fall River is located on the southern banks of the Mattapan River, about 15 miles (24 km) east-northeast of downtown Boston and 25 miles (40 km) north of Worcester. The first people to live here were the Winthrop Islanders who arrived in 1630. The town was first called Newburyport but changed its name to Fall River in 1828 after General John Forbes’s campaign to drive out Native Americans from their land in what is now Rhode Island. Fall River became a U.S. port on Long Island Sound and developed as a fishing village until it became an industrial center with manufacturing of textiles, firearms, shipping products and fertilizer during World War I and II before becoming a bedroom community for Boston during the late 20th century. In 1980, Fall River was chosen by then Mayor Joseph O’Neill as one of America’s “100 most disadvantaged communities” based on his efforts to promote economic development there through investments such as job training programs for low-income residents and other public works projects that have made the community more economically secure over time. Today, FallRiver has become known for its gentle rolling hillsides flanked by large riverside cities like Quincy and Worcester – two centuries after it originated as an agricultural village – its well-preserved architecture dating back to colonial times including several mansions still occupied by local families; its scenic bridges spanning two major rivers; and its Art Deco buildings which line Main Street near downtownBoston. Fall River, Massachusetts is a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 9,724 at the 2010 census. Fall River is part of the Springfield–Braintree–Easton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Falls River" comes from the Massachusettes’ Algonquian word for "the place where the falls (a small stream) flow." The first Europeans to visit Fall River were sailors who sailed upriver from Portsmouth in 1620 and logging parties that came ashore in 1622 and 1623. In 1736, Samuel Adams founded FallRiver brewery there with his brother-in-law Joseph Gardner. By 1800, ------- beer had been produced here as well. In 1854 it became a city when it was incorporated as a village within Plymouth County under charter No. 344 of that year. On July 1, 1881, Fall River merged with neighboring towns of Woburn and Northbridge to become one large municipality named Plymouth County Municipality No 2 under charter No. 727 of that year which lasted until January 1, 1933 when it was replaced by Plymouth County Municipality No 3 effective February 28th In 1916 the old fire hall burned down and new one was built on Meeting Place Street adjacent to the old post office building; this building still stands today as an example of early 20th century architecture in Fall River On November 11th 1918 during World War I local citizens raised over $1 million thru bake sales and donations to help feed troops fighting overseas This money helped finance many things such as: purchasing boats for military purposes (USS Constitution), providing clothing for soldiers (American Expeditionary Forces), buying war bonds (United States Treasury Department), etc., making sure food supplies reached troops overseas safely The factory complex on South High Street presently housing our Public Works department also dates back to this time period
