The first scopes were used in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1636. The Reverend Samuel Smith and his family set up a small observatory on the site of present day Brown University. Samuel was the first to use a telescope to study stars and planets. He also discovered two new planets, Uranus and Neptune. In 1838, Colonel John Edward Emerson bought one of Samuel Smith's telescopes from him. Emerson began using it toObserve the Stars and Comets". He made many important discoveries including the Halley comet and Pinacoteca del Retablo of Madrid which are now on display at the Harvard Museum of Fine Arts. In 1892, Augustus de Morgan purchased one of Colonel John Edward Emerson's telescopes from him and began using it to Observe Meteorology. Important discoveries include: The Meteors of 1888, The Great Storms of 1893-1894, (The Blizzard Of 1893) And The Meteors Of 1904). For his achievements he was awarded an Oscar by the Academy Awards in 1895. Today there are several observation sites around Fall River for visitors to enjoy: Brown Observatory overlooking Market Square; Perkins Observatory across from Mount Holyoke College; Eliot Observatory built atop former millrace; Fiske & Bacon Planetarium on North Main Street; South Weymouth Historical Society Museum has a collection of optical instruments dating back to 1776 . After watching Saturn, Galileo realized that he could use his telescope to observe things other than just planets and stars!
