Everett, Massachusetts is a town located in western Massachusetts. The population was 5,442 at the 2010 census. Everett is part of the Boston-Cambridge-Fenway metropolitan area. The first permanent settlers in Everett were those who arrived in 1636 by the Mayflower from England. They were led by Puritan preacher Cotton Mather and built their own small settlement on the outskirts of present day Everett. The town's name may be derived from an Indian word meaning "the place where fish are caught." In 1641, John Howe purchased land in what is now Everett and began to build a brick church, which was dedicated on July 4th of that year. In 1764 when Methuen County was created, Everett became part of it and its first selectman, Gideon Wheeler, served as its first justice of peace. In 1827, General David Hunter Purchase donated land southwest of present day Everett to form the nucleus for what would become Harvard University campus. The university's first president and founder—Andrew Wigglesworth—set about purchasing site for new buildings and opened up most of today's downtown area for student occupancy within five years. At that time there were only a few homes around central square, much like today's Eliot Square community center complex housing both undergraduate students and graduate students alike across several floors with underground parking spaces for faculty/staff members only during term times when classes are in session; this building actually dates back to 1892! Additionally, many dormitories (like Eliot House) still remain today on various streets near central square–a valuable real estate resource dating back to the early days of higher education!
