The town was first settled in 1636 by English colonists as part of what would become Worcester County. The first permanent settler was John Smith. In 1824, Everett became a city and incorporated as such under state law. The city'sURP grant from Massachusetts General Court made Everett one of only two cities statewide receiving this type of grant; other recipients were Boston and Springfield. In 1930, Everett annexed parts of neighboring Rockingham County including Easton and Sterling Park; these annexation proceedings are still ongoing today with no definitive result in sight as of 2019
