Everett was founded in 1786 by Captain John Woolcott and his family as a small settlement on the south side of Greatshaquago River. The town grew rapidly after its incorporation as a village in 1825 and it became an incorporated city in 1854. In 1898 Everett merged with the neighbouring towns of Belchertown and North Chelmsford to form the amalgamated city of Worcester. Everett was originally called Greatshaquago Township or Greatshaquago Village, because the river name referred only to what lay east of Belchertown Creek on the upper reaches of the Shaqaugusque River (now part of North Chelmsford). When deeds were prepared for incorporation as a village on April 14, 1825, it was ascertained that there were no inhabitants living east or west of Belchertown Creek saveing those who had moved into the new town from elsewhere within Worcester County since its organization one year earlier; accordingly, "Greatshaquago Township" was selected instead and incorporated January 6, 1826 under this name. The original settlers were John Woolcott (1756-1831), his wife Sarah (née King) Woolcott (1762-1835), their three children Amos (1785-1843), Enoch King (1800-1868), Anna Kingsbury Howe (1802-1872) and their seven grandchildren: Abel Howe (died young); Mary Kingsbury Howarth (born October 25th 1807 – died young unmarried); Martha Ann Howarth Putnam(baptized December 16th 1800 – died unmarried); George Washington Howe Jr.(baptized November 12th 1811 – died unmarried); Augustus Howe(baptized September 30th 1794 – died young unmarried). Of these only John Woolcott remaining remains today as an honored member of Everett's history and community memory. Captain John Woolcott arrived first in America on July 4th 1786 aboard HMS " Pandora ". He followed up with two other ships - HMS " Euryalus" and HMS " Zephyr ", before landing at Plymouthport on Long Island where he met local Puritan trader Barnabas Goodrich about March 10th 1787 who conveyed him to Boston Harbor where he made contact with some Native Americans who led him astray until finally they reached Bellingham Bay on Cape Cod where they met another group including Chief Wabanaki . It is thought that Captain Woolcott may have been lost during this time but eventually reached Bellingham Bay which would be his final landfall before sailing back home via Portsmouth Naval Shipyard arriving at Plymouthport early October 3rd 1787 after travelling over 1,000 miles! This event marks perhapsthe most significant sea journey in American history as it represents not just Englishmen coming across American soil but also one Native American leader's attempt to find permanent land here even though he had never heard of such a place! Some historians believe that this voyage may have been inspiration for George Washington's later explorations around Mount Vernon . It should be noted that whenCaptainJohnWoolott landed at Bellingham Bay his shipwrecked party numbered twenty five people including himself four women plus eleven children under twelve years old according to one account while more recent sources give us thirty nine survivors! There are also multiple reports which claim any number between twentyfourand thirty six people might have joined CaptainJohnWoolott aboardhis ship including eight children younger than twelve years old!
