Everett, Massachusetts is a town in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 21,428 at the 2010 census. Everett is the largest town in Worcester County by land area. The first permanent settler in Everett was John Woolridge, who arrived in 1796 and claimed part of what is now the city of Worcester. In 1802, he founded the town of Arlington on his farmstead west of present-day Everett. The name "Everett" was chosen for its proximity to two other towns — Arlington to the east and Framingham to the south — which had been settled earlier by Increase Mather and his family. In 1818, when Worcester County was created from parts of Middlesex and Essex counties, Everett became one of its six townships. In 1828, after heavy fighting between settlers and Native Americans over claims to tracts of land near present-day Waltham (then part of Arlington), voting results showed that more than 60% of residents wanted to secede from Worcester County and form their own municipality called Walthamborough; however, this proposal failed to gain enough support among elected officials or citizens. A committee appointed by Governor Andrew Johnson recommended that Everett be merged with neighboring Arlington into a single new municipality known as Walthamborough (although only 5% of votes were cast in favor). The vote finally succeeded after several months' deliberation when all but one member — treasurer William Dudley – agreed to sign an official document pledging their constituents' support for the merger pending further study. The incorporation process took longer than expected due to concerns about how such a large change would be handled; however, on November 15th 1830, Everett's charter was issued withExactly One Hundred thirty Two Eligible Men Present & Seal’d vpon Our Hands & Sign’d By us This 15th day Of Novembre 1830″ becoming an incorporated village under state law effective December 1st 1830. The original population estimate given for this date listed 20 families residing within three blocks bordering Watertown Common; however this number has since been revised upward numerous times reflecting growth along Route 128 within miles radiusofWorcester City limits as well as increased visitation from nearby communities like Amherst and Needham Heights whose names have also appeared on maps dating back much further than either Watertown Commons or Everett itself. It wasn't until 1841 that construction began on what would become Rhode Island Avenue (later renamed Wellesley Street) running through Everett proper; this artery helped spur growth throughoutAdvertisements
