In 1897 a railroad depot was built which continues to serve as Everett's main commercial center today; it also served as the town hall until 1959 when an new building replaced it. In 1916 Everett had its first election for school board with James Fenton being elected unopposed; he would later serve two terms as mayor before leaving for good in 1929 when Everett adopted a charter form of government under which village status could be granted or denied by vote of the board rather than by individual members alone In 1928 Everett elected its first female teacher, Mrs Evelyn Wicks-Freedman In 1941 during World War II local residents helped provide food for troops stationed nearby at Fort Devens After Pearl Harbor local residents rallied against UFW labor organizing efforts culminating with their successful campaign to have all non-unionized businesses closed down
