Everett, Massachusetts was a town in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 692 at the 2010 census. Everett is located on the Amherst–Winchester line and is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Everett was Francis Farewell who arrived in 1636 and made his home there until his death in 1649. In 1764, John Eliot founded a sawmill here which he continued to run until 1824 when it closed due to competition from mills in Worcester. However, Everett's location on the Winchester Line made it very convenient for shipping goods between Boston and Worcester. This led to an increase in development around the mill site including retail stores, churches, schools and residences. In 1825, two brothers named John Eliot bought the mill site from Eliot's heirs and began operations as a cotton gin and factory called "The Cotton Mill". They produced high-quality cotton cloth until 1860 when they switched to making shoe leathers. The mill continued production through World War II but closed after the war because of technological changes such as plastics becoming available that could make leather more affordable than cotton. Today only remnants of the mill remain within walking distance of its original site which has been designated as a historical landmark by Trust for Public Land. Everett also played an important role during its early days as a town; it was one of several places where straw from haystack fires was burned to create heat for local farmers during the winter months while their crops were growing; this helped provide power necessary for activities like grinding corn into flour or weaving fabrics into homespun fabric. Additionally, Everett became known for its thriving smallpox vaccine program which vaccinated over 3 million people across New England between 1795 and 1827.
