The town was formed from part of Northbridge in 1821 and named for Captain George Everett who had purchased land there in 1794. The first permanent settler in Everett was Samuel Tuttle who built a log cabin on the site of his future home in 1821. He and his family were among the first to reside in what would become Everett when it was incorporated as a town by an act of the Legislature on January 5, 1825. The name "Everett" originated with Captain George Everett who had purchased land there in 1794 and donated it to the town for $5 per acre (later raised to $10). Today's downtown area of Everett is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas within Plymouth County and has been unchanged since its incorporation into town. The Commercial Street Historic District contains over 100 buildings dating back to 1695-1775 which are representative of early mercantile development around Boston Harbor.

Everett is one of two towns in the town of North Attleboro and the other is South Attleboro. The first permanent settler in Everett was John Smith who founded a farm on what is now Hadley Road in 1768. The town was chartered on March 26, 1828, when it split from North Attleboro. In 1835, the U.S. Post Office moved from Watertown to Everett after that post office had been closed for many years in western Massachusetts due to lack of customers. In 1890, Everett became a part of Boston and its metropolitan area; however, Everett remains an independent municipality with its own government and school district. In 1903-04 (the only time this happened), local residents successfully lobbied for annexation into Boston proper through their popular referendum campaign called "Annex Everett". After several years of negotiations between Boston Mayor Thomas Ewing and then-Alderman James Fenton (now mayor of Somerville), the annexation finally came through on November 2nd 1906 after much public opposition from locals who felt they were being taken advantage of byBostonians eager to annex more land into their city Limits! As part as an integral part of Boston’s inner-city fabric since incorporation as a city in 1898 – Everett has always maintained strong cultural ties with her larger sister city both geographically and historically despite some high profile differences such as large percentages of ethnic minorities ( Latino/a) living within its borders while Worcester predominates nationally among English speakers –serving together as law enforcement partners during major crime events downtown or along Hingham Street has been central to our community spirit ever since!
