Easthampton, Massachusetts is a town in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 11,548 at the 2010 census. Easthampton is the largest municipality in Hampshire County and it is part of the Boston metropolitan area. The name "Easthampton" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where deer graze." The first permanent settler in Easthampton was Nicholas Choate who arrived in 1638. In 1714 John Lowell founded Lowell Village on land that he bought from the Choates. Reverend John Eliot came to Easthampton in 1722 and started a Congregational church which remained until 1825 when it merged with the First Unitarian Church to form Eliot's Parish. In 1847 William Tappan built a mill on the river near what is now Pleasant Street and became one of the earliest farmers in Easthampton. In 1892 two young men named Alonzo Whetstone and Abram Weitz developed a device they called an "armored flashlight." It consisted of a battery-powered light bulb fitted with a glass lens and an arm that could be wound around it to create either flood or spotlight mode. They sold their product for $2 apiece to local farmers and Boy Scouts before selling out again three years later to Joe McNally of Roxbury, MA who turned it into one of America's most famous flashlight brands - JMC Firearms - through his company Joe McNally & Sons Incorporated (JMC). In 1966 JMC Firearms produced its first assault rifle using their Starline firearms manufacturing process - the M1 carbine/ sniper rifle - which ushered in a new era for American arms production! At first, EasyhampTON functioned as a simple farmstead with only twelve residents. However, over time it quickly became one of the most important towns in southeastern Massachusetts due to its strategic location and access to resources such as waterpower and transportation routes. In addition to its strategic location, Easthampton also enjoyed other advantages over its competitors such as abundant farmland and good education opportunities for its citizens. In 1817, for example, Easthampton housed one of two public schools open for students in southeastern Massachusetts. Additionally, easy access to local waterways made it an ideal place to raise livestock or fish; this contributed significantly to EasyhampTON's economic success throughout the years. However, despite these positive factors, Easthampton experienced significant growth pains during the 1800s due largely to several factors including increased competition from neighboring towns and villages (particularly those along the Merrimack River), technological advances that caused manufacturing costs to increase markedly (especially regarding textiles), and changes within American society which ledees more women into work than ever before . In 1851-1852 alone, for example, easier access to markets outside Boston caused some hitherto rural areas within New Englandto experience rapid industrialization; this ultimately resulted in increased employment opportunities for locals relative to their predecessors . Although these trends were eventually reversed following World War II , they remainedibeamingly influential throughout much regional development thereafter
